Triad NOW condemns insulting statement by NC Senator Joyce Krawiec
We, the members of the Triad chapter of the National Organization for Women, are disappointed by Joyce Krawiec’s disdainful tweet directed towards participants in the Women’s March on January 21, 2017. As an elected woman, Senator Krawiec clearly forgets that she is only able to hold public office because of the gains made by previous generations of women who dared to protest in ways that people of their times found audacious and offensive. We ask that Senator Krawiec issue a sincere apology for her lack of professional judgment, and denounce the predatory and vulgar behaviors of President Trump that led marchers to protest against in the first place.
Many of our Triad NOW members are constituents of Senator Krawiec, and are quite aware that her voting record is not supportive of the kinds of issues we stand for and marched for: women’s right to control their own bodies without government interference, ending violence against women (including what our new president bragged of doing, ‘grabbing them by the pussy’), ending systemic racism, establishing equal pay for equal work, and equality for LGBTQ persons. Nevertheless, she and other public servants (Mt. Airy Mayor David Rowe, NC Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey) are publicly revealing their true colors, including how little they think of their own constituents, under the influence of President Trump’s bullying rhetoric.
They need to remember that they were elected to SERVE the people of their district, municipality and state; they should all exhibit the qualities we expect of our elected officials, including respect for their constituents and a willingness to consider other points of view. Furthermore, for those emboldened by President Trump’s win, remember that he does not have a mandate from the people of the United States: his was a win by the system of gerrymandering, falsehoods and voter suppression. Your constituents are not just marching – we are watching, organizing and voting.
