There is anger.
There is fear.
There is second-guessing and finger-pointing.
Be honest. Did you visit the website about moving to Canada? Did you want to go back to sleep Wednesday morning and just wake up four years later? Are you having mood swings from despair to organizer on overdrive? Right there with you!
In spite of what appears to be nearly unmitigated disaster, there is stirring renewed determination and courage to not only continue, but to STEP UP the work we have been doing!
In his post, “What Now for Progressives?” Robert Creamer outlines solid steps for taking this unbelievable setback in, and then moving forward. Here are the guiding principles he lays out in brief, but it’s worth a full read:
- We can’t sugar coat the magnitude of the disaster
- We must resist the impulse to give up and sink back into “non-political” activity
- Our first priority must be to organize to defend ordinary Americans from the worst excesses of a Trump presidency
- More than ever we must stand up straight for progressive values
- We know a lot already about the main underlying cause of last night’s Trump victory, and we must keep it firmly in mind as we plan for the future.
- We cannot allow the other side to frame who is and who is not the “political establishment” that the public rejected last night.
- We must be willing to be bold as we take action to defend our values and the interests of ordinary Americans
- As Americans and as progressives, we must never lose faith in each other

There are lots of layers to this loss. It’s going to get ugly. but we own the high ground. Grieve as you need to right now, but then commit to action! There is much to be done, and you’re needed at the table!
