OK, yesterday was a tough day. We worked hard. We lost – this time. I’m not willing to give up, and neither is NOW! We are part of the long arc of progress toward women’s equality in this country, and we will win! Take heart from the amazing turnaround in events following the passage of Amendment One here in North Carolina – justice will ultimately prevail.
In my e-mail today, and maybe yours as well, was this pledge from NOW:
Even though the election is over, my job isn’t done. I pledge to
*Speak out: Words have power. I will use my voice to ensure that legislative responses to the problems women face will help women in every community. I won’t use the words “pro-life” to describe those who support policies that effectively shut down abortion clinics, putting women’s health and well being at risk.
*Talk: I will talk to my family, friends, and neighbors about the need to protect and promote women’s rights. I will encourage them to think about how access to basic health care like birth control is an economic issue, not just a social issue.
*Stay informed: I’ll maintain awareness of legislation that would affect women’s rights and lives in my state. One way of staying informed is subscribing to NOW action alerts (you can sign up automatically through this pledge).
*Take action: I’ll work with advocacy and direct-service groups that work to protect and promote women’s rights, or get involved with my local NOW chapter! I’ll sign petitions and pledges demanding my elected officials prioritize women’s issues.
*Get involved online: I’ll use Twitter, Facebook and blogs to connect with others — in my town, my state, my country and across the globe — working for reproductive freedom and justice, constitutional equality, economic justice, the end of violence against women, racial justice, and LGBTQIA rights.
Today, choose one of NOW’s priority issues to focus on and get active!
