Women and allies have quickly set up events across North Carolina and the country to fight back against these unconstitutional attempts to gut Roe, control women, and punish doctors. Conservative and sometimes frighteningly clueless lawmakers file and pass these bans in a country where rapists too often go free and domestic violence is rampant. Together we say: stop the abortion bans. And get to work addressing real problems!
As of 5/17/19, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Utah have passed new antiabortion laws, and similar bills are pending in other states. These laws are designed to oppress and control women, and to threaten and intimidate doctors and medical staff. The goal is to overturn Roe v. Wade, using the new makeup of the US Supreme Court with the addition of Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.
Alabama’s abortion ban law is the most extreme – it bans virtually all abortions, with no exceptions for rape and incest. The Alabama law targets doctors by making performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to 99 years imprisonment!! The author of the Alabama’s bill should be ashamed of how little he knows about how women’s bodies work. When questioned, Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss admit he didn’t know the proper medical terminology and timelines related to pregnancy, and he thinks the only time a woman should be allowed to end her pregnancy is before she knows about it. He confused chromosomes and hormones in his answers.
Ohio Republican House Member John Becker said ectopic pregnancies can be moved over to the uterus. No they can’t! Becker also stops insurance from covering birth control in the Ohio law.
A 20 week ban law that North Carolina lawmakers had made was struck down as unconstitutional by a federal judge on 3/26/19. Courts have ruled in the past that the anti-abortion ‘heartbeat bills’ are unconstitutional. Yet a new round of them have popped up in 15 states this session! Republican leadership in North Carolina has been trying to override Governor Cooper’s veto of their so called “Born Alive” bill, putting the bill on the calendar repeatedly for weeks already.
NC NOW President Gailya Paliga says, “These laws are designed to oppress and control women and girls. Women are rising up again to fight this. NC Lawmakers should be closing rape loopholes in NC law and expanding Medicaid.”
