First off, three cheers to Patricia Arquette’s feminist declaration for pay equity and equal rights while receiving her Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Boyhood!
Common and John Legend accepted the award for Best Original Song, “Glory” from the movie Selma, and took the opportunity to point out the attacks on the Voting Rights Act and the fact that America is the most incarcerated country in the world.
In easily the most dramatic moment of the night, Graham Moore, in accepting the Best Adapted Screenplay award for The Imitation Game, shared that he almost committed suicide as a teen, and took the opportunity to speak directly to anyone who’s ever felt weird or different, telling them to “stay weird, stay different.”
Alexandro Iñárritu, director of Birdman, had several turns at the microphone last night. He ultimately dedicated the Best Picture award to his fellow Mexicans in Mexico, as well as the latest generation of immigrants in this country, saying he hopes they will be treated with the same dignity and respect as those before them who built our “incredible immigrant nation.”
I almost never watch these awards programs – so glad I did last night!
